a p.u.r.e. workshop by Jagna Anderson, María Ferrara, Dodi Helschinger and Susanne Soldan in cooperation with Culture Fox India
24 Oct 2017

Observation of the city life with all its movements, sounds and situations delivers a lot of inspiration for artistic work. But how to use this manifold and complex material to devise a post-dramatic theatre piece? And how to facilitate this process successfully within a group of collaborators?
This workshops unfolds the creative process beginning with collecting of material, specifying leading ideas and questions, developing a dramaturgical frame and facilitating the process of collaborative creation. In combination of practical excercises and feedback rounds we are going to introduce some classical methodologies for community-based piece devising, as well as the experiences of our own work on the piece Görli Dreamin’ (2015-2016).

Soundwalk: 8 Sept, 22 Sept, 6 Oct
for students of Applied Anthropology of Voice, a certified course at UdK Berlin, lecturer: Ulrike Sowodniok

as guest facilitator at Klangraum // Stimme, Wednesdays 20 – 21.30 h, starting from 10. May 2017, Exploratorium Berlin

Open choral improvisation with vocal ensemble Medulla

We play with the overlapping of our vocal sounds. Simultaneously we can explore the internal dynamics of the choral sounds, its resonances and transformative potential within our own body spaces.

How does the perception of our body and its sounds change the overall sound? How does the relationship between the individual members of the chorus change through this sound? What do we define as our vocal-linguistic base and where does it take us? When does meaning emerge from the subtle interspaces of the embodiment of vocal sound?

We will experience our choral sound sculpture in the studio and in urban spaces and also explore its temporal relations and subtexts in the context of movement.

This workshop is open for beginners as well as for experienced singers with openness to share common experiences.

Facilitator: Ulrike Sowodniok & guest facilitators from the vocal ensemble Medulla

ABOUT THE IIIF beta
BACKGROUND

One of the crucial elements of advancing an art form is artistic research. Research and documentation, and the process of doing it, allow the form to open, consider, grow and take pauses to understand. All three of us, and many others around the world that practice instant composition within one discipline or across many, are interested in growing the knowledge and practice of our art, and increasing its public.

At the moment, our knowledge base is housed on the website of the Carpet Sessions, which are the interdisciplinary improvisation research sessions that are happening regularly for the last three years in Amsterdam in the Netherlands. In the near future, we will move the Knowledge Base to it’s own website (currently called improvisation.wiki) to reflect the widening and sharing of this artistic research globally.

Our desire is to render this knowledge base relevant, user-friendly, and global. If it’s website is well – structured, innovative and interactive, it will be useful.

WHAT ?

IIIF 0.1 will be held in Amsterdam, the next ones probably in Gothenburg and Avignon, followed by other European cities where connected improvisation artists live and work.
This first meeting is meant to better define our and your ambition for a connected international community of improvisers that collects and makes useful the various approaches to improvisation. The intention of this work would be to further connect, inspire and develop pathways between the various communities in Europe and around the world.

WHO ?

FOR THIS very FIRST just unwrapped BETA IIIF, we are proposing 4 “research circle” sessions to people who have expressed to us a specific interest in the process of documenting artistic research in interdisciplinary improvisation, about 8 people, and we are proposing 3 “open circle” interdisciplinary improvisation practice sessions, designed along the lines of the Carpet Sessions in Amsterdam and the MAC #0’s (Sharpening Stones) of Instant Pudding! in Paris and Dansverk Sweden. The focus of the “open circle” is practicing instant composition. The focus of the “research circle” is figuring out how to document it. The work done in the open circles will inform the work done in the research circles, and vice versa.

every thursday, 18.00 – 20.00, at Mime Centrum Berlin

LAST CLASS: OCTOBER 8!

Performance lab offers space for experimental set-ups in the field of ensemble improvisation/ instant composition with movement, sound, voice and language.

The core of the work is deepening of sensory awareness, interlinking of listening, sensing and seeing and questioning the seeming contradiction between impression and expression. Another lab issue are improvisation structures and we are exploring how the material delivered by sensory awareness can benefit from the compositional limitations of a performance score. urban matters. creative exercises in urban ecology of sound and movement

24 – 30 july 2016 | Mime Centrum Berlin

Urban Matters is a workshop based on the experience of the performance project Görli Dreamin’. It sets off from John Cage’s appreciation of the “Symphony of the City” and R. Murray Schafer’s concept of acoustic ecology, and goes beyond hearing/listening, to include sight, touch, smell and proprioception, working both in the urban space and in the studio.

We will explore the city with our sensing, sounding and moving bodies. We will investigate movements, sounds, textures and the spatial and temporal patterns that our bodies create during and after this encounter.

We will question our roles and states as listeners/observers or as sounders/movers and integrate these questions into a creation process in the studio.

Open for movers, vocalists and musicians/sound artists. Maximum 12 participants.
If interested, please send a short letter of motivation to Jagna Anderson: team@impro-per-arts.de

simple scores #1 | 25 october 2015 | 15.00 – 19.00 | Mime Centrum Berlin
simple scores #2 | 8 november 2015 | 10.00 – 14.00 | Mime Centrum Berlin

This laboratories are a deepening exploration of performance scores. In a durational process we will examine the key variables and thresholds of an exemplary ensemble score. We will use the restrictions of the score both to investigate the pivotal points of its intrinsic dramaturgy and to dig into the depths of the body-based material. We will negotiate approaches and adjustments that enable us to stage this score in a most satisfying manner. We will learn how to develop, also instantly, new scores for improvised or semi-improvised performances. More Information
